It’s probably no surprise but most homes are broken into during July and August, prime vacation time. We’ve all been there – excited about finally taking a long awaited break but at the same time you’re worried about making sure everything is OK at home.

In order to keep your home safe while you’re out of town, there are a number of preventative measures you can take that will put your mind at ease.

One of the main ways you can feel better about leaving home is to ask a relative, neighbor or friend if they would mind checking on your house while you’re gone. Provide them with a spare key so they can bring your newspapers or mail in, while also watering your plants and even caring for your pets. Having someone check in daily will also ensure that no other issues, such as wiring or burst pipes, occur.

In addition to installing a professional security system, you can also place deadbolts on your doors and windows, making it more difficult for thieves to get into your house. It’s also important that you don’t leave computers on and that all valuables, including documents, are locked up or placed in a safety deposit box at the bank for safe keeping.

It’s also crucial that you don’t announce your plans on social media. Believe it or not, thieves scour Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., trying to figure out who’s home and who isn’t. Not only should you keep it off social media, you should also refrain from relaying your plans on answering machines.

Other tips include:

Speaking with your police department to let them know you’ll be out of town and would appreciate it if they could provide a presence in your neighborhood.

Don’t leave your lights on around the clock – that’s a dead giveaway in the middle of the night that no one is home. Buy a timer that will allow you to schedule when the lights come on and go off.

Have your mail and newspaper stopped until you return. Nothing screams nobody’s home like a lawn littered with still rolled up newspapers and a box full of mail.

Unplug appliances that aren’t being used while you’re on vacation. This will not only save you money, but protect them from power surges.

If you’re gone for more than a week have someone mow your yard.

If you have more than one car, leave one in plain sight in the driveway. This could certainly deter thieves.

Finally, if you generally leave a spare key on top of the door, in a flower pot or under a welcome mat, make sure you take it before you leave on vacation. Trust us, thieves will check all of those places. Call one of our Fleenor Security representatives today, they will be happy to answer all of your security system questions.

The post How to Protect Your Home While on Vacation first appeared on Fleenor Security.

When you lock up your business at the end of each day, are you confident that it’s secure and safe from criminal activity? If you’re not entirely sure, we’re here to help. Following is a list of steps you can take that will make you feel more confident that your business is protected.

Alarm System. Have a reputable, licensed alarm company install alarm system, along with a central monitoring station. Make sure the system is checked on a regular basis. You can also make sure people know you have an alarm system by advertising it on a window or sign.

Solid doors. Your outside and security doors need to be heavy, lined with metal and secured with stout metal crossbars. Also exposed hinges need to be pinned so that they cannot be removed and doorjambs should also be solid.

All windows should have secure locks and be an anti-theft glass. Solid metal grates can also be used.

Install double-cylinder deadbolts with removable collars on all outside entrances and inside security doors. Make sure the deadbolt has at least a one-inch throw that contains a hardened steel insert and that it’s protected by a latch guard. All padlocks should be mounted on bolted hasps, locked and made of hardened steel.

Exterior check. Make sure all openings are secured and that all walls, the roof and basement are all checked out. Keep dumpsters, vehicles, etc., away from the building, ensuring good visibility to the building.

Have a fireproof safe. Make sure it’s resistant to thieves, securely anchored in place and not out in the open. Lock up any valuables you might have when the business isn’t open. Regularly change the combination if others have the code.

Make sure the outside and inside of your building is well lit. Use of motion detecting lights would also be beneficial.

If applicable, install heavy-duty fences around your business that would deter intruders.

You should also be careful about who has access codes or keys to your business. All keys should be coded and assigned to employees so that it’s easily determined who has which key. Also, master key systems do not equal top-notch security so consider having multiple keys to open various locks. If an employee leaves, make sure keys are returned and if combination locks are used, change the combination.

We can help secure your business 24/7, 365 days a year by using the latest technology. Stay in the know wherever you go with Fleenor Total Connect Remote Services. Security system control, real-time alerts of business openings, closings and alarms, video viewing, and mobile control put peace of mind in the palm of your hand – helping you stay connected to your business.

Our products are also extremely easy for team members to operate while providing the protection your business requires. Give us a call today and let us keep your business safe and secure!

The post How to Secure Your Business first appeared on Fleenor Security.

Most people realize the importance of having smoke alarms in their homes, but what about carbon monoxide (CO) detectors?

CO is an odorless, colorless, toxic gas that is a by-product of combustion. Any fuel burning appliance, such as a gas stove, vehicle, tool, etc. can produce dangerous levels of CO gas. CO, which can build up indoors and poison people and animals through breathing can be found in grills, gas ranges, dryers, water heaters, as well as furnaces, lanterns and fireplaces.

How serious is CO poisoning? Every year, more than 400 people die from it in this country and in excess of 20,000 have to make trips to emergency rooms because of it. About a fifth of those people end up in the hospital. And everyone, no matter the age, is at risk. Those most likely to suffer from CO poisoning include the elderly, as well as babies and individuals who suffer from chronic heart disease, breathing issues or anemia.

CO hinders the body’s ability to carry oxygen to body tissues, including the brain and heart. When it is inhaled, it mixes with the oxygen that carries hemoglobin of the blood to form carboxyhemoglobin. When that happens, the hemoglobin can no longer transport oxygen and in essence as you breath in the CO it replaces the oxygen in your blood. Breathe too much of it and it can become deadly within minutes. (The most common symptoms of CO poisoning could be mistaken for the flu as they include dizziness, headache, nausea, chest pain, vomiting, confusion and weakness.)

There are a number of ways to ensure that no one in your home ever suffers from CO poisoning, which include:

Never use a gas range to heat a home

Make sure any gas appliances are vented properly and have them checked annually

Never use portable, flameless chemical heaters inside

Have your chimney cleaned yearly

Buy only appliances that boast the seal of a national testing agency like Underwriters’ Laboratories

If you smell an odd odor from your appliances, have it serviced immediately

Never use a generator inside your house, basement or garage or less than 20 feet from a door, window or vent

Carbon monoxide detectors monitored by Fleenor Security provide an early warning by using reliable electrochemical sensing technology to measure CO levels in the air. If a dangerous amount of CO is detected, the carbon monoxide detector will alert residents by sounding an alarm tone and flashing its red LED. Protection is provided 24/7 by an alarm transmission to our central station regardless of whether residents are away from home, sleeping, or already suffering from the effects of this dangerous gas.

If CO concentration reaches dangerous levels and triggers an alarm, the central station has the ability to contact the occupant and/or first responders. The central station will also alert the end user if the detector has been tampered with or is experiencing mechanical trouble. The detector will also alert our central station when the detector reaches end-of-life due to the limited life span of CO detection technologies.

If you suspect a CO leak or a detector goes into alarm, exit the home or business immediately and call your local fire department which can check for high levels of CO before returning to the home.

The post Carbon Monoxide Poisoning first appeared on Fleenor Security.

Are you thinking about installing a security system for your home but feel you’re not equipped to determine exactly what you need? If so, you’re certainly not alone, as most of us have no idea what type of system we would need or the questions you should ask when talking with a security provider.

Deciding the right home security provider is, in fact, the answer to any questions you might have. Once you have the right provider, they will take care of all your concerns. In order to choose the right one for your needs, there are specific questions for which you’ll need answers.

For instance, how long have they been in business? Experience is crucial and you will want a company that has been in operation for a certain number of years. Longevity generally means you’re dealing with an established and successful business. Other things to consider:

Research the top equipment lines and check to see what brands the company uses. You will, of course, want reliable equipment if you’re investing in a security system. Also make sure you know the various features (notification system, remote access, etc.) available at the company.

Is the company licensed and are warranties available? You will want a security company that operates with the laws and regulations in your area. Warranties will also be the norm for respected companies, as they will have no issues backing their systems and services.

How much does it cost to install a system? Make sure you get costs up front and determine what those costs cover (equipment, installation, monitoring, storage, etc.)

Where is the company located? These days many companies use their websites to offer online services. However, a local company is preferred because they know your area, can easier maintain your system and you can actually speak to someone in person.

How often will your system be checked? This is key as regular maintenance is important to ensure that your system is working around the clock.

Does the company have their own Central Station or do they subcontract a mega center to monitor you alarm system? Where is the Central Station located?

Are there any “hidden” charges? Make sure you know if there are any extra charges the figure into the cost.

If you move, what happens to your system? Some companies will let you take your system with you and allow you to keep the same contract but some won’t. Make sure you know the company’s policy regarding moving.

Does the system qualify for a home insurance discount? This largely depends on your insurance provider but some systems do qualify.

Don’t be shy about getting answers to these questions before deciding on a security system provider. After all, it’s your money and your home and you deserve to know all the details. Call one of our Fleenor Security representatives today, they will be happy to answer all of your security system questions.

The post Important Questions to Ask Your Home Security Provider first appeared on Fleenor Security.
